The Atlas is the biggest vehicle Volkswagen builds for this market, and out here three rows and seven seats is not a nice-to-have. It is what Panhandle families need: a run to Palo Duro Canyon on Saturday, four kids and their gear to a game in Canyon on Tuesday, and a hitch that will pull 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Every 2026 Atlas uses the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four making 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic, so you are not trading power for a lower trim. You are choosing equipment.
One thing worth knowing before you drive anything at this elevation: Amarillo sits around 3,600 feet, and naturally aspirated engines lose roughly a tenth of their output up here. A turbocharged engine holds onto it. That is why a loaded Atlas still feels willing merging onto I-40 at Soncy with a full third row, and why the 5,000-pound tow rating is a number you can plan around rather than one that only works at sea level.
Pick your trim by what you do with it. The SE covers the basics well. SE with Technology is where most Atlas buyers land, because it adds the daily convenience items without pushing into leather. The Peak Edition is the one to look at if you spend time on caliche county roads or head out to a lease road east of town: 4MOTION all-wheel drive is standard and it rides on 18-inch all-terrain tires rather than an appearance package. SEL and SEL Premium R-Line are for buyers who want the leather, the 21-inch wheels and the Harman Kardon audio, and who accept that a low-profile tire on Panhandle pavement is a firmer ride. Use the trim links above to narrow to the one you want.

Volkswagen Atlas Questions We Get in Amarillo, TX
How much can a 2026 Volkswagen Atlas tow?
Up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped with the factory tow package and a trailer with its own braking system. That covers a two-horse bumper-pull, most single-axle utility trailers and a mid-size boat. If you are regularly pulling more than that, tell us what the trailer weighs loaded and we will be straight with you about whether the Atlas is the right tool.
Does the Atlas come with all-wheel drive?
4MOTION all-wheel drive is available across the Atlas range and comes standard on the Peak Edition. Front-wheel drive is the more common configuration. The drivetrain links above cover new and pre-owned Atlas models together, so you can see every 4MOTION example in one place.
Do I need 4MOTION in Amarillo?
For most people, no. Amarillo streets get plowed and salted, and a front-wheel-drive Atlas on decent tires handles a normal Panhandle winter. 4MOTION earns its keep if you regularly leave pavement, if you live out past the county line where the roads turn to caliche, or if you commute through ice before the trucks have been out. Tires matter more than drivetrain either way.
How many people does the Atlas seat?
Seven in the standard three-row layout. The second row slides and tilts far enough that an adult can get into the third row without a wrestling match, which is the difference between a third row you use and a third row you fold flat and forget about.
What is the difference between the Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport?
Same platform, same 2.0-liter turbo, same 269 horsepower. The Atlas has three rows and a squared-off roofline. The Cross Sport drops the third row and slopes the roof, which trades seats for style and a slightly lower load height. If you need seven seats, the Atlas is the only answer of the two.
Can you find an Atlas that is not on the lot?
Often, yes. We can locate a specific trim and color combination through the VW dealer network or place a factory order if you would rather build exactly what you want and wait for it. Call 806-350-8999 and tell us the configuration you are after.
