Volkswagen Announces Its “Drive Bigger” Campaign

News Release Amarillo, TX: Volkswagen has long been known for thinking small, particularly with the introduction of the iconic Beetle in the mid-nineteenth century. But these days, the German automaker is going big. Earlier this year, VW announced its “Drive Bigger” campaign, a global initiative with the objective of neutralizing carbon emissions across its portfolio of vehicles. How does VW plan on accomplishing such a tall task? By adding smarter automobiles into the fold. The following concept vehicles are just a few of the models Volkswagen has in the works: ID. ID. CROZZ ID. BUZZ ID. VIZZION To kickstart things, VW is making an $800 million investment to expand its assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Volkswagen is also sharing its electric vehicle (EV) platform with other companies in hopes that emissions-free cars will become more affordable to the average car buyer. The ultimate goal is carbon neutrality by 2050. How You Can Get Involved at Street Volkswagen VW doesn't plan on rolling out its new line until 2022, but luckily, the “Drive Bigger” campaign isn't the only thing it's doing to make the world a better place. This summer, Volkswagen is giving back to classrooms across the U.S. through its collaboration with DonorsChoose.org. Stop in to our dealership in Amarillo, Texas, to see how you can contribute. While you're here, feel free to check out our inventory of new VW cars for sale and our list of new Volkswagen specials. Volkswagen EV Soon to Complete Epic 33-Country Road Trip

Think your commute is brutal? You have nothing on Wiebe Wakker. The Dutchman will soon complete a journey of more than 55,000 miles from his native Netherlands to Sydney, Australia, that’s required more than 1,000 days behind the wheel. But the real difference between Wakker’s commute and yours is just how much he enjoyed it. That’s because Wakker completed his journey in a modified Volkswagen Mk V Golf Wagon, the sporty — and apparently very reliable — design from the fifth generation of the compact Golf. According to Volkswagen, Wakker’s drive is the longest ever completed in an electric vehicle, and by a large margin. The previous record was 13,670 miles. Wakker covered more than 55,300. He is also the first person to visit 33 different countries in an electric vehicle, a journey that included putting rubber to the road in Turkey, Iran, India, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia. But Wakker’s “Blue Bullet” (named for its baby blue exterior) wasn’t always an electric car. It began life with a standard gasoline engine. A Dutch utility company looking to do research on vehicle-to-grid technology replaced the traditional engine with an electric motor and battery. Because there were no electric vehicles with such technology at the time, the company took 50 VW Golfs and converted them to electric vehicles. That research project dates back to 2009, making the Blue Bullet among the first modern electric vehicles. With a battery range of 124 miles, Wakker estimates he recharged some 450 times along the way and relied on the kindness of strangers for meals and places to sleep. And the trip wasn’t all just spent hunched behind the wheel. Averaging around 55 miles per day in a car with 201 horsepower and a top speed of 111 MPH, Wakker enjoyed plenty of time for sightseeing and adventure, all of which is documented on the blog he set up for his trip. Along the way, Wakker also spent time meeting with various companies, government organizations, and media outlets about the sustainability efforts being pursued in each country he visited. A Volkswagen took Wiebe Wakker on an epic journey. See where one can take you by exploring VW cars for sale in Amarillo, Texas.

What Does the I.D. Buzz Concept Mean for the Future of VW?

At this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Volkswagen took the opportunity to show off their I.D. Buzz Concept along with some general information on the I.D. Series of electric vehicles. These cars are set to complement the current Volkswagen lineup and help the brand appeal to even more drivers. Getting to Know the I.D. Buzz Concept The I.D. Buzz Concept is a modern take on the original Volkswagen Bus that was such an iconic vehicle for travelers, families, and more. The VW Bus hasn’t been on sale in the United States in years, although you will still find plenty of used models in other countries. You won’t even find a current Volkswagen van in the U.S., but the I.D. Buzz Concept may be setting the stage for a comeback. Quick Overview The I.D. Buzz is an electric and autonomous microbus that brings back fond memories of the original VW bus that drivers and passengers alike loved. From the outside, it looks very reminiscent of this model but with plenty of modern touches. It has the new MEB platform that will also be found on other Volkswagen electric vehicles. The I.D. Buzz is all-wheel drive and has 369-horsepower. It has the ability to go 270 miles on a charge, drive up to 99 MPH, and reach 60 MPH in just five seconds. There should also be a version with slightly less range, 268-horsepower, and rear-wheel drive. Autonomous Technology The big news for the I.D. Buzz Concept is that it has an autonomous feature. You can put it in I.D. Pilot mode, which will retract the steering wheel so that you can swivel your driver’s seat 180 degrees and face your traveling companions. This is the perfect example of what many drivers want from autonomous vehicles, as it focuses on enjoying your traveling experience. Where to Find All Your Favorite VW Models The I.D. series, including the I.D. Buzz, wasn’t the only group of Volkswagen models that made an appearance at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. That’s great news because the I.D. Buzz is unlikely to reach production without some changes and several years of work. Volkswagen also showed off the VW Atlas, which will be available to drivers in Amarillo and around the country in the near future. You will be able to find this SUV, along with all your favorite VW models at Street Volkswagen, where we have an extensive selection of new and used vehicles. Make sure you check out what we’ve written about the Atlas, then stop by our dealership to schedule a test drive.

5 Incredible Innovations Volkswagen Brought to CES 2017

At the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event in Las Vegas, Volkswagen took the stage to show off their new infotainment system and plenty of other innovations. With all the new technology coming your way, there are more reasons than ever before to get excited about the future of Volkswagen. VW Shows Off New Infotainment Features at CES 2017 User-ID Profile The User-ID profile is part of the infotainment system that Volkswagen is working on, which is crucial for people who share a vehicle. This profile lets you set preferences for things like dash display configurations, ambient light settings, and more. Profiles can also recognize and save your favorite multimedia like music and podcasts. Digital Key Although the Digital Key technology was first introduced at the 2015 CES show,  it has only been available on the e-Golf until now with limited functionality. If you have the e-Golf with this system, you can use your smartphone to open or close your car. Thanks to the new User-ID profile, the Digital Key will go a step further. Now whenever you get inside, the vehicle will already know your preferred settings. With the updated system, Volkswagen also lets you use your Digital Key to set restrictions. The time-based restrictions are great for anyone with teen drivers or you can get creative and unlock your trunk, allowing your preferred delivery service to place package inside. Of course, this can also do wonders for car-sharing services. Alexa Voice Services Integration People who love the Car-Net connected telematics services appreciated hearing about Alexa Voice Services integration. Now you will be able to rely on Alexa to access your apps and services that are accessible through Car-Net. Alexa can also control these functions outside of your car as well. Updated HUD The newest version of the Head-Up Display (HUD) system has two planes of display. A projection that seems as if it is a few feet in front of the Volkswagen will show immediate information such as navigation. Less important information will be displayed by the windshield’s base, such as your radio station. Other VW Innovations at CES In addition to the Volkswagen innovations related to the infotainment system, the automaker showed off other advances. The evolved Digital Cockpit creates a 3D effect with its twin-stacked screens. This should make navigation easier by adding depth. The I.D. Concept car also made an appearance with its 168-horsepower electric motor and four-door hatch design. This vehicle is expected to arrive in 2020. By 2025, Volkswagen hopes to have an autonomous version available. It is the first model built with the new Modular Electric Drive platform. Check Out the Current Tech at Street VW Now that you know what you can expect from Volkswagen in the near future, it is time to take advantage of the amazing technology available right now. VW Arteon

Check Out the Upcoming Model That Will Replace the Volkswagen CC

The Volkswagen CC has been available since 2007, but the 2017 model year will be its last. VW has plans to replace this model with a new four-door coupe called the Arteon. Information is still being released about this newest Volkswagen, but there is plenty already available. Let’s talk about what we know now and what we can expect to learn in the near future. A New Four-Door Coupe from Volkswagen You can get the best information on the upcoming Arteon through the teaser film made by Volkswagen on YouTube. Based on this video, we know that the new Arteon has clear inspiration from the Sport Coupe GTE Concept you may recognize from last year’s Geneva Auto Show. The design isn’t quite as futuristic, but you will still see the swoopy silhouette that resembles that of a fastback that enthusiasts loved at the auto show. Compared to the CC To help visualize the new VW Arteon, compare it to the existing Volkswagen CC. The Arteon will be a bit longer and have a stretched version of the familiar modular MQB platform found on the CC and other VWs. Even though it’s replacing the CC, the Arteon will be a bit higher up on the market, meaning you can expect it to cost a bit more but have more technology and a more luxurious interior. Other Important Details This new VW will have a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and the choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It will have a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 280 horsepower on its top-of-the-line model at launch. There is a good chance that an Arteon Hybrid will eventually arrive, but it won’t be available at launch. However, you will see plenty of updated tech with enhancements on some features familiar to drivers of the CC. Expect a gesture-controlled infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster. Where to Get Your VW CC If you love the Volkswagen CC and can’t imagine driving any other model, then get a 2017 VW CC at Street VW. The friendly team at our Amarillo, Texas, dealership can also give you information on the upcoming Arteon and help you stay updated. Make sure you watch this space and follow us on social media for the latest news from Volkswagen.

The VW Beetle is More Special Than Ever

Fashion comes in cycles, and each time it comes back around a modern twist is placed on it. The Volkswagen Beetle, an iconic car first made in 1933, is now back and better than ever. Volkswagen has unveiled a line of Special Edition Beetles, adding a more modern feel to a classic design. These unique models offer the technology, luxury, and performance we’ve come to expect in the 21st century while remaining true to the Volkswagen Beetle’s nostalgic roots. Beetle Dune One of the special edition Beetles is a descendant from a favorite Volkswagen modification: the dune buggy. There’s no mistaking the Beetle Dune for anything else but a VW bug with an aggressive inspiration. The widened track and raised suspension is a nod to the Beetle’s dirt-racing history. That theme continues inside with special sport seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The Volkswagen Car-Net® App-Connect, which brings music and apps from your smartphone to a touchscreen, ensures you’re not sacrificing the modern conveniences you desire for the nostalgia you’re seeking. Beetle Convertible Denim What were the 1970’s all about? Denim. This stonewashed blue Beetle is a tribute to the Volkswagen Beetle’s classic Jeans model. For this special edition, Volkswagen took the sporty Beetle convertible and added a rear spoiler, a multi-function sport steering wheel, a color touchscreen, and more. Only 2,000 of these vehicles will be produced and with a zippy 170 horsepower in the engine, they’ll come off the assembly line fast. #PinkBeetle When Josef Ganz designed the Volkswagen Beetle, he likely didn’t envision Barbie-pink and a name after a Twitter hashtag. Meet the Volkswagen #PinkBeetle. The Fresh Fuchsia Metallic paint job covers everything except the wheels and will draw attention on any crowded highway while the pink plaid seats round out the theme on the interior. This special edition Beetle evolved from a concept car that that was introduced at the 2015 New York Auto Show and is set to hit dealerships in limited quantities in the fall of 2016. But before you dismiss the seriousness of this car, keep in mind that it has already raised more than $30,000 for breast cancer research. Hit the Street If the Volkswagen special edition Beetles have caught your interest, stop into Street Volkswagen in Amarillo and speak with one of our associates. We’re happy to talk all things VW, including these spirited special edition models and our own great selection (which we think is pretty special in its own right). See you soon.
